Software Engineering Internship: Visual Model-Building Platform for Earth Science
Fujitsu Research of America (Santa Clara, CA)
Fujitsu Research of America (FRA) was founded in Silicon Valley to extend the global reach of Fujitsu R&D. By conducting advanced research in AI, Computing, and Earth sciences, FRA supports Fujitsu’s mission to make the world more sustainable by building trust in society through innovation.
We are seeking a highly motivated software engineering intern to join the Digital Climate team at FRA.
This internship focuses on building a visual, low-code platform that allows users to compose, configure, and run Earth-science machine learning models without writing code. The goal is to enable domain experts, such as climate scientists and hydrologists, to build models (e.g., diffusion models for precipitation downscaling) using block-based interfaces, while the system translates these workflows into executable machine-learning pipelines. The emphasis is on software engineering, system design, and developer experience, rather than model research.
Job Responsibilities
- Design and implement a block-based or visual programming interface for composing Earth-science modeling workflows.
- Develop backend pipelines that translate visual model definitions into executable ML workflows (e.g., data ingestion, model configuration, training, inference, evaluation).
- Build modular abstractions for common modeling components (datasets, preprocessing, models, losses, evaluation metrics).
- Integrate user-defined workflows with existing ML frameworks and compute environments.
- Collaborate with climate scientists and ML researchers to ensure the platform supports real-world Earth-science use cases.
- Prototype and iterate on developer and user experience, focusing on usability for non-programmers.
Requirements
- Working toward or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong programming skills in Python, with experience in building modular systems or pipelines.
- Experience or interest in front-end development (e.g., React, TypeScript, or similar) or workflow/orchestration systems.
- Familiarity with machine-learning concepts or ML frameworks is a plus, but deep ML expertise is not required.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with interest in building tools for scientific users.
Fujitsu is the largest IT company in Japan and among the largest globally. Fujitsu’s mission is to make the world more sustainable by building trust in society through innovation. Join us in building the next generation of accessible, visual tools for Earth-science modeling and climate intelligence.
Fujitsu salaries are aligned to the specific geographic location in which the work is primarily performed. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the circumstances of each situation. The pay range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to: specific skills, qualifications, experience, and comparison to other employees already in this role. The pay range for this position is estimated at $40/hr. to $65/hr. USD. Additionally, this role may be eligible for a short-term incentive based on company results and individual performance.
As a technology company, Fujitsu recognizes that human resources are its most important capital. To create an environment where all employees can work positively and healthily, both in mind and body, we offer a full range of health, 401K, and other benefits.
