Research Intern at Fujitsu's Space Data Frontiers Research Center
The Space Data Frontiers Research Center (Space Center) at Fujitsu specializes in pioneering business opportunities in space-related technologies. The center focuses on using AI and advanced computing to process, analyze, and utilize data from space in real-time, aiming to support both Earth-bound industries and future human space exploration.

    Job responsibilities 
    •    Develop mathematical optimization and deep learning techniques for hazard-aware evacuation routing/infrastructure planning and emergency policy design under future climate scenario.
    •    Collaborate with our team members and external researchers. 
    •    Publish research in journals and conferences. Transfer the deliverables to patents, conference presentations, and workshops.  

Key focus areas
Develop advanced artificial intelligence techniques, including reinforcement learning and inverse reinforcement learning, to analyze and model human mobility patterns. Utilize these insights to optimize hazard-induced emergency planning strategies, making them more realistic and effective for both short-term and long-term future climate scenarios. This work aims to enhance evacuation routing, infrastructure planning, and policy design by integrating human behaviour modelling into emergency response frameworks, ultimately improving outcomes during climate-related or other disaster events. 
 
Requirements 
•    Currently enrolled in a university pursuing a PhD degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, and other relevant STEM fields for the entire duration of the internship.
•    Extensive expertise in casual analysis, reinforcement learning, and mathematical optimization.
•    Experienced in programming, training, and evaluating ML pipelines using Python and deep learning frameworks like Jax.
•    Strong track record of demonstrating through accomplishments such as research publications, impactful projects, or success in technical competitions.
•    Excellent communication and collaboration skills through written communication and verbal interaction.

Who we are looking for
•    Hands-on experience with GPU-accelerated deep learning frameworks like Jax and PyTorch
•    Familiarity with reinforcement learning
•    Worked with diverse real-world scientific datasets.
•    Previous experience working with cluster schedulers (e.g., Slurm)
•    Experience with large-scale simulations and ML model training is plus but not required. 

The internship duration is 3 months and full time (40hours / week). Locations are flexible in Santa Clara, CA office and/or remote location.

Fujitsu salaries are aligned to the specific geographic location in which the work is primarily performed. ​ It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the circumstances of each situation. The pay range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to: specific skills, qualifications, experience, and comparison to other employees already in this role. The pay range for this position is estimated at $40/hr. to $55/hr. USD.
