SAP S/4HANA Senior Consultant
Plant Maintenance (PM)

Configure and support SAP Plant Maintenance processes including maintenance orders, notifications, equipment master data, preventive maintenance, and testing.

Role Overview
Maintenance today is a gap rather than a system: activity is recorded in Excel and paper logs, preventive maintenance is limited to annual shutdown-based scheduling, calibration is performed periodically with records held outside the ERP, and there is no central system for equipment performance or downtime analysis. Core production equipment — presses and molding machines — is largely standalone. Your mandate is to build the PM foundation that makes accurate OEE, data-driven maintenance and auditable calibration possible: a governed technical object hierarchy covering machines, molds, tools and test equipment; preventive and condition-based maintenance plans; work order processes the shop floor will actually use; and integration to PP-DS capacity, QM calibration and the machine-connectivity layer.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead PM discovery and validation workshops across four plants; establish requirements where none are formally documented today and produce signed-off functional design.Configure the technical object structure: functional locations, equipment master and hierarchies, and classification of machines, molds, tools/screws and dies as maintainable assets carrying the characteristics planning and execution depend on.Configure maintenance notifications, work orders and order types, task lists, maintenance items and plans, and the planner group / work center model; design equipment BOMs and the spare-parts interface to MM.Design preventive maintenance — time-based and counter/performance-based plans — replacing annual shutdown-only planning, plus condition-based triggers fed by machine data from the shop-floor connectivity layer.Design PM–QM integrated calibration: calibration inspection lots and plans, results recording, usage decisions, and equipment status blocking for out-of-calibration instruments.Design breakdown, downtime and malfunction capture with reason codes to a standard sufficient for credible OEE; represent planned maintenance, mold change and calibration as capacity-blocking downtime PP-DS must respect.Design maintenance cost capture and settlement to CO, mobile maintenance execution via Fiori for technicians, and the maintenance KPI set (MTBF, MTTR, schedule compliance, availability) handed to the analytics workstream.■  BATCH MANAGEMENT & TRACEABILITY EXPERIENCE — PREFERRED, NOT REQUIRED
Batch Management and traceability experience is preferred but not required for this role — the PM scope is primarily asset-centric. Candidates who understand the following will design a stronger interface to the traceability model at the heart of this program:How equipment, mold and cavity identity feed batch characteristics and lot genealogy, so a defect traced to a batch connects back to the specific machine, mold and cavity that produced it — and to that asset's maintenance and calibration history.QM-integrated calibration (test equipment management) and how calibration status affects the validity of inspection results recorded against a batch.Batch-managed spare parts and shelf-life-controlled maintenance consumables where they occur.Required Qualifications8+ years SAP consulting with 4+ full-lifecycle implementations and hands-on SAP Plant Maintenance configuration responsibility; at least 2 on S/4HANA (1909 or later) including Asset Management scope.Deep expertise across the PM object model: functional locations, equipment master and hierarchies, classification, maintenance BOMs, task lists, maintenance plans and items, notifications and work orders.Proven design and implementation of preventive and counter/performance-based maintenance programs from a low-maturity or non-existent baseline.Hands-on PM–QM integrated calibration / test equipment management.Downtime, malfunction and breakdown capture designed to a standard sufficient to support credible OEE and availability reporting.Solid PM integration knowledge with PP / PP-DS (capacity and downtime), MM (spare parts) and CO (maintenance cost settlement).Ability to establish requirements where the client has little formal documentation, and to deploy maintenance execution to technicians moving off paper.Preferred QualificationsBilingual English/Japanese (business level); prior delivery in Japan, including familiarity with Japanese maintenance and calibration record-keeping practice.SAP Asset Performance Management, Predictive Asset Insights, or condition-based maintenance fed by IoT/edge data.PM integration with SAP Digital Manufacturing or an MES for machine-signal-driven maintenance triggers.Mold and tool lifecycle management — shot counts, refurbishment cycles, tool hardness tracking — in a molding or stamping environment.OEE modelling and the data quality required for availability, performance and quality factors; SAP BTP clean-core extensibility and CDS-based maintenance analytics.SAP certification in S/4HANA Asset Management.Language Requirement — Bilingual English/Japanese Preferred, Not Required
Fluent professional English is required for design documentation, deliverables and steering-committee communication. Business-level Japanese is a strong advantage — many process owners, shop-floor personnel and legacy-system custodians work primarily in Japanese, and much current-state documentation exists only in Japanese — but it is not a condition of appointment. Interpretation support, bilingual design documentation and pairing with bilingual business analysts are provided, and strong candidates will be considered regardless of Japanese-language ability.
Engagement Details
Full-time consulting assignment across the Explore, Realize and Deploy phases. Hybrid delivery with periodic on-site presence at the Japan sites during validation workshops, integration testing, cutover and hypercare. Reports to the workstream lead, working alongside client SMEs, client IT and the corporate global SAP template and clean-core governance teams.
Top 4 Job Requirements For This RoleSAP Plant Maintenance configuration depth — functional locations, equipment master and hierarchies, task lists, maintenance plans and items, notifications and work orders.Building a maintenance function from a low baseline — establishing preventive and counter-based programs where only annual shutdown scheduling and Excel logs exist today.PM–QM integrated calibration — calibration plans and inspection lots, results recording, usage decisions, and equipment blocking for out-of-calibration instruments.Downtime capture for credible OEE — malfunction and downtime reason coding to a data-quality standard that supports availability reporting and PP-DS capacity.
