Research Intern  – SciML/AI for Urban Wind Field Prediction

Location: Fujitsu Converging Technology Laboratory (CT Lab), Santa Clara, CA

Schedule: Spring Semester | Part-Time (20 hrs/week) | Remote/Hybrid options available

About CT Lab

The Converging Technology Laboratory (CT Lab) at Fujitsu focuses on integrating research across multiple technical domains to address societal challenges. Our mission is to apply evidence-based, multidisciplinary approaches spanning natural sciences, engineering, and humanities to shape sustainable public policies and economic activities.

We are seeking innovative and driven researchers to join our team in Silicon Valley. This internship offers a unique opportunity to tackle urban environmental challenges using advanced AI and computational techniques while continuing your academic program.

Role Overview

You will contribute to developing AI-driven digital twin models for predicting wind field behavior in complex urban environments, supporting applications in sustainability, urban planning, climate resilience, and drone operations in cities.

Key Responsibilities

Research & Development:

  • Design and implement AI/ML models for urban wind field prediction, incorporating factors such as building geometry, street layouts, and microclimate variations.
  • Explore Generative AI, ML-based data assimilation, and hybrid approaches combining computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with machine learning.

Data Integration & Pipeline Development:

  • Build end-to-end AI pipelines for ingesting, transforming, and visualizing multi-source data (e.g., sensor data, GIS maps, CFD simulations).
  • Rapid prototyping using PyTorch and Python; experience with GPU acceleration and distributed training is a plus.

Collaboration & Dissemination:

  • Work closely with researchers across disciplines to integrate diverse datasets into Social Digital Twin systems.
  • Publish findings in scientific journals and present at conferences, workshops, and competitions.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program in applied mathematics, computational engineering, environmental modeling, or civil engineering related fields.
  • Strong foundation in AI/ML techniques and experience applying them to physical or environmental systems.
  • Familiarity with CFD principles, urban microclimate modeling, or geospatial data processing is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate and improve existing methods, evidenced by projects, publications, or competition results.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Technical Skills

  • Programming: Python (mandatory), experience with PyTorch for ML/AI model development.
  • CFD Software: OpenFOAM, ANSYS Fluent, or similar tools for fluid dynamics simulations.
  • Data Tools: GIS platforms, visualization libraries and tools (e.g., Matplotlib, Plotly, ParaView), and data processing frameworks.
