The Technical Services Engineer Expert is responsible for providing advanced engineering, administration and operational support across Microsoft Exchange, Skype for Business and Windows Server (Wintel) technologies within a secure Defence environments.
Operating within a complex, mission-critical infrastructure, this role requires a highly skilled technical specialist capable of diagnosing and resolving complex issues, implementing infrastructure improvements, and supporting continuous service availability across multiple classified and interconnected environments.
The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional technical capability, adaptability and professionalism while working in a fast-paced operational environment with constantly changing priorities. They will work collaboratively with infrastructure teams, security, applications, networking and project teams to ensure the stability, performance and security of enterprise collaboration platforms.
Responsibilities
Exchange Administration
- Provide Level 3 engineering support for Microsoft Exchange environments (on-premises and hybrid where applicable).
- Administer mailbox databases, DAGs, transport services, certificates and Exchange infrastructure.
- Perform advanced troubleshooting across mail flow, authentication, Autodiscover, Outlook connectivity and client access services.
- Implement Exchange upgrades, cumulative updates, security patches and infrastructure improvements.
- Monitor Exchange health, performance and capacity planning.
- Investigate and resolve complex incidents and recurring problems.
- Support disaster recovery, backup and restoration activities.
Skype for Business Administration
- Administer and support Skype for Business infrastructure including Front End Pools, Edge Servers, Mediation Servers and Persistent Chat (where applicable).
- Manage Enterprise Voice configuration, dial plans, voice policies, conferencing and user provisioning.
- Troubleshoot SIP signalling, federation, conferencing, presence and Enterprise Voice issues.
- Support integration with Exchange Unified Messaging and Microsoft collaboration services.
- Maintain service availability and performance across secure Defence environments.
Wintel Infrastructure Support
- Provide advanced administration of Windows Server environments.
- Support Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, PKI and Certificate Services.
- Perform server builds, patching, upgrades and lifecycle management.
- Support VMware virtual infrastructure where required.
- Assist with storage connectivity and server performance optimisation.
- Perform PowerShell scripting and automation to improve operational efficiency.
Operational Support
- Act as the technical escalation point for complex infrastructure incidents.
- Lead root cause investigations and produce technical reports.
- Participate in Major Incident Management and Problem Management activities.
- Maintain operational documentation, standard operating procedures and knowledge articles.
- Support after-hours maintenance and on-call activities where required.
- Ensure all work aligns with Defence security requirements, change management processes and operational standards.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to automate repetitive operational tasks.
- Recommend improvements to infrastructure resilience, security and performance.
- Contribute to infrastructure design reviews and technical planning.
- Participate in technology refresh programs and system migrations.
- Mentor Level 1 and Level 2 engineers and provide technical guidance across the wider support team.
